Calais

It is hard to say when I first visited Calais.  My Aunt and Uncle owned a camp on Curtis Pond for at least 40 years.  A must visit place is the Maple Corner Community store.  The back of the store is the home of the Whammy bar, where local musical talent comes to play.

Another must see place is the Robinson Saw Mill. The mill was constructed by Joel Robinson in 1803.  It was used to cut lumber with an up and down saw, powered by a overshot water wheel. Just down the street is the Robinson Cemetery where you will find the graves of many civil war soldiers.

The Kents Corner Historic District is another interesting place to visit.  It is centered on the junction of Kent Hill Road, Old West Church Road and Robinson Cemetery Road.  It was a stagecoach stop and is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.  Kents corner was settled in the late 1780s by the Wheelock family.

Calais will always hold a very special place in my heart.
