After a month tied down doing home improvement projects, finally some time for more 251 visits. We invited Mark’s mom Betty to come with us today. Bennington, then Windsor, and then Windham counties.
Started up Rt 7, then from Manchester Rt 30 and Rt 11. The mountain views from Bromley are absolutely stunning.
Peru (Bennington Co.) has a lovely town green, with 2 historic foundations preserved and lots of green, shady space. We didn’t go in, but the Hapgood General Store sure smelled like it does a great breakfast. Hapgood Pond Rd took us to Hapgood Pond Recreation Area, which Betty said they had visited to swim and picnic when Mark was little; he remembered it, too. Beautiful spot, nice swimming beach and walking paths, lots of green grass and shady trees.
Hapgood Pond Rd took us into Landgrove, where we turned onto Landgrove Rd and quickly ran out of paved road. The gravel road twisted and turned heading northeast, taking us past some lovely homes, amazing stone wall fences, and beautiful views across fields to the mountains.
Next into Weston (Windsor Co.) from the west. We visited the Vermont Country Store, of course, and I treated myself to dark chocolate sea salted caramels. My favorite spot in Weston is the town green, with its gazebo, Civil War memorial and charming view of the village. We’ve been here before, so we skipped the mill and its museum this visit but it’s well worth the time.
We headed south on Rt 100 to Londonderry (Windham Co.), with a plan to stop there and then go through South Londonderry and on to Winhall. I’m still not sure how, but we missed the route. We did go directly through Londonderry, so I’m checking it off the list, but there were no good photo ops. We wound up heading straight back toward Manchester and home to Bennington. Another day, I guess.
